Temporary Treatment with Silver Diamine Fluoride

Did you know that we now offer temporary treatments for your child’s cavities? Silver diamine fluoride is a noninvasive solution for your child’s tooth decay. Imagine stopping cavities in their tracks without any drilling or discomfort! At your child’s twice-yearly dental cleaning, our pediatric dentists at Jet Set Smiles Pediatric Dentistry in North Phoenix will determine if your child’s teeth are in need of a silver diamine fluoride treatment.

What is Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver diamine fluoride is an FDA approved antibiotic liquid we use to control cavities. While the ideal way to treat decayed teeth is removing the decay and placing a filling, this alternative treatment allows us to stop tooth decay with a noninvasive method, which is particularly helpful for young children that still have their baby teeth.

The primary purpose of silver diamine fluoride is to stop decay from progressing. It does not restore the tooth structure, so if there a cavity in your child’s tooth, silver diamine fluoride can prevent it from growing, but cannot restore or improve function in the tooth.

We apply silver diamine fluoride to your child’s teeth on active tooth decay to prevent further progression of the condition. The silver component of silver diamine fluoride is an antimicrobial agent, which means that it kills any bacteria present and stops the formation of new biofilm. The fluoride component of SDF prevents any further demineralization of your child’s tooth structure.

What Is the Treatment Process?

Our application of silver diamine fluoride is a straightforward, noninvasive process. We first clean your child’s teeth thoroughly, then dry and isolate the decayed tooth. We dip a micro brush in a drop of silver diamine fluoride and place it on the tooth for approximately two minutes. We will ask your child to refrain from eating or drinking for at least an hour after the procedure.

We typically apply multiple treatments of silver diamine fluoride for best results. The standard regimen is two applications, two weeks apart. Silver diamine fluoride has been shown to be safe in use for toddlers and children, with the only side effect reported being reversible staining where the silver diamine fluoride is applied.

What Are the Benefits of Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatments?

The main benefit of silver diamine fluoride is the ease of comfort afforded to our young patients. It offers a conservative approach to treating tooth decay without the use of drilling, noise or injections. It is also a cost-effective treatment option because one drop of silver diamine fluoride is enough for up to five teeth. Your child will experience less anxiety and will not need any anesthesia or sedation.
