At Jet Set Smiles, we use a variety of relaxation tools and techniques to help your child have a comfortable and fun experience. Laughing gas – the most common pediatric sedation

Many mildly anxious children respond very well to “happy air” or “laughing gas” – nitrous oxide/oxygen. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide/oxygen as safe and effective for treating children. We place a mask gently over the nose and the child will smell a sweet, pleasant aroma. They will remain awake and alert and can communicate easily. Beneficial effects of nitrous oxide include:

• More relaxed, less anxiety
• Reduced pain
• Appointments seem shorter, easier to sit still
• Less awareness and fear of dental instruments – mask blocks the view

Oral conscious sedation

Some children or treatments may require medication to lightly sedate the child. We determine which medicine to use based on your child’s overall health, level of anxiety and dental treatment. Oral sedation medication can take up to an hour to become effective. Most children become relaxed and sometimes drift into a light sleep, but they can be easily aroused.

General anesthesia

When treatment is required for a serious dental condition, or in certain special situations, our north Phoenix pediatric dentists may recommend general anesthesia to ensure a safe and comfortable treatment. We’ll discuss the benefits and risks of general anesthesia and why we’re recommending it for your child.

Before choosing the sedation method

At the time of your appointment, we’ll ask you if your child is on any medications or if your child has respiratory conditions such as allergies or sinus congestion that make breathing through the nose difficult.
