The Language of Children

Dr. Patel and his caring team at Jet Set Smiles Pediatric Dentistry are aware that children in pain often experience anxiety and have a hard time explaining what hurts. We are highly trained and experienced in effective communication with children to understand their needs and always use positive, soothing language. We strive to ensure that each child leaves our office with a happy, healthy smile.

The Pediatric Dentist Advantage

Just as you would take your child to a pediatrician to receive medical care suited for children, pediatric dentists are experienced in working with children to make dental care easy and fun. Not only do they receive additional years of specialty training, but they also receive sophisticated training in pediatric dentistry psychology.

When you take your child to our pediatric dentist’s office, you will notice how our space is designed with your child in mind. We take into account the needs of infants, children, teens, and children with special needs. We understand the psychology of children and are well prepared to use language to communicate with them effectively and to reach and comfort them, all while offering quality, individualized care.

The Language of Children

It is important that you allow us to explain any procedures to your child. Some parents try to alleviate anxiety by explaining what will happen based on their experiences before the appointment. This can backfire because children may be fearful when hearing words that sound scary and unfamiliar. Dr. Patel has extensive training and experience communicating with children and will explain each step in a way that they understand.

Dr. Patel and his experienced team take the time to get to know your child and use kid-friendly language to communicate. For example, we may ask questions like, “Does that tooth hurt, or does it feel funny?” The responses we receive provide invaluable information.

We understand that children may feel anxious and uncomfortable at a dental office. The tools we use and the names of the procedures can be scary to a child. Instead of saying x-rays, we may say tooth pictures. Tooth shower sounds more exciting than water rinse, tooth cleaner is a more favorable alternative to drill, and wiggle out is a whole lot less scary than extraction. Our goal is to alleviate anxiety and make our equipment and procedures sound appealing.

In addition to verbal communication, body language and tone play a significant role in calming a child during the visit to our office. Children are very observant and will always search for reassurances. We talk to your child in a soothing manner throughout any procedure and demonstrate calm and reassuring body language which goes a long way in easing your child’s anxiety.
